Anyone interested in helping me work out a campaign generation system for Starmada?

The "Simplest Campaign System" in the Sourcebook is good as far as it goes, but I'm thinking there is a need for something a bit more robust -- although still short of a standalone game like The Sovereign Stars would be.

A Fed light cruiser with "Drone Rack" would get 1 shot then?

Each number listed on the ship card is one "flight" of 4 drones -- thus, "Drones (4)" is a total of 16 individual drones, in 4 groups of 4.

While i am at it, if you fire a photon torpedo in overload (which is slow firing) can you fire it in standard mode next utrn?

No. If a weapon is fired in a mode that has the "slow" trait, it must wait a turn, even if it also has a mode that is not "slow".

Does their license allow you to use whatever you create with their software for commercial purposes?

If you are asking whether I think it's appropriate to allow the Gefechtskehrtwendung (bless you! smile) as an "offensive weapon", I don't see why not. If the Germans have the ability to perform the maneuver, I would assume they can do it whenever is most advantageous for them.

However, I would agree with limiting its use to once (max twice) per game. And I like the idea of only allowing in on an Ace.

1) The rules do not mention if ships block LOS. The scale is 2 nautical miles per hex for Grand Admiral. So I am wondering if, for example, a line of BBs or BCs that are in between your BB and the target BB would block due to the intervening ship profile and funnel smoke.

Sounds reasonable as a house rule.

2) Stacking rules say five ships per hex. Sound reasonable to allow 1 DD Flotilla and 1 CL per hex along with the five ships?

As mentioned in the designer's notes, the stacking rules are based on an assumed distance between ships in a line. You can expand or contract this limit as you see fit without breaking the game.

3) I was drawing up the orders of battles for Jutland and appears there are not stats for a couple of older DD classes.

The cutoff for ships was made at 1000 tons. Both the Acasta and V1 come in under this limit, so they were omitted.

And finally, can a Minimum Range weapon fire on a Stealthy target in the first third of its range?

A literal reading of the rules would say "Yes", although that feels weird... I'm gonna say "no". A minimum range weapon can only attack a stealthy target in its medium range band, as if it were at long range.

but it still tracks it just can't track thru the engine exhaust.  so a 300 deg arc.

Simply give the weapon a [GHIJK] firing arc.

I'm an idiot. Of course, it should be less than x1 (or, exactly 1, but certainly not more than 1).

If you're proposing it is affected by point-defense in addition to countermeasures, then go with x0.9.

I need a Mod for a weapon that is affected by point defense?  I do not want to use the seeking weapons rules.  also I would like suggestions on how the increment point defense?

I would apply a -1 penalty when attacking a target with point defense, and use a x1.2 modifier for the weapon, at least as a starting point.

Is there going to be a topic specially for this game? I assume we shouldn't be posting errata-type questions here. I've been building a spreadsheet to design ships and I can't replicate the ships in the book.

Questions/comments can go in the Starmada section of the board.

Regarding any spreadsheet problems, check here first:

You could use the existing size "classes" (for example see rule E.1: Damage Control).

Hull 1-3 = x1 Damage
Hull 4-8 = x2 Damage
Hull 9-15 = x3 Damage
Hull 16-24 = x4 Damage
Hull 25+ = x5 Damage

For point-costing, the issues are similar to those raised by the "ignores shields" trait. If you assume an equal number of opportunities against each size class, a modifier of x3 would be appropriate.

Also, I imagine larger fleets / higher total points means that my dreadnought-favoring opponent will get a chance to field all of his designs (last game we played, he only had a thousand points and couldn't pull an 800 point ship).  Should be fun.

Funny thing... In the SFO book I say the maximum hull size is 12.

Any bets on how long THAT will last? smile

One way subs could be modeled is just as a "one shot" resource.  You have them off the table, and then at some point you are allowed to bring them on to attack - rules for allowable placement based on enemy anti-sub ships would be key.  If it survives that, then it takes its torp shots and disappears.  Its much easier than tracking hidden movement for the whole game and constantly having to check for sonar etc.

I'm thinking this would work for air assets, as well.

I'd buy GF2 and a WWII supplement in a heart beat if the WWII supplement had some rules for Air and Subs.

Kevin and I were talking about this over the weekend.

Were there historical examples of surface battles in which subs and/or aircraft took part? Obviously, there were plenty of air-vs-ship engagements, and subs were a constant threat, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a ship-to-ship battle where aircraft/subs got involved.
