Sounds like a plan

We played another game of Starmada here in Jacksonville.  We think we have fixed Fighters & drones by giving them the equalivant of these weapon traits:  {Acr,Acr,Dfs}, for the same CR & SU Cost.  That is, they hit on 3+ and roll twice as many dice as they would in the rules.  A new player friend of ours played a CV that had 15 fast, tough fighter-flights and also launched drones.  It was escorted by two frigates.  It was a brutal fight, but we were able to win by shooting down the fighters after losing two ships and then destroying the drone launching CV.    Boy did it carry lots of drones!  0ur changes have made fighters formitable & worth the cost, but not excessively powerful.  We think that they are balanced.  I have designed a CR=450 CVL with 10 flights of strong fighters, and a CV with 20 strong fighters that has  a CR=900.  It will be fun to try them.
Some of my friends don't have any short-ranged AA type weapons on their ships... :twisted:

It works well.  We should try it when we play at (Gaming) Glen's store in Davie. 8-)

I have played games that have lasted only 4 or 5 turns.  The game we played here in Jacksonville last Saturday 2/9 lasted ten turns.  There was much manuevering at long range.  We play until one side is clearly beaten & they conceed.
:idea: We have made a change to innitiative.  The first turn we roll for it it, then after that, it goes automaticly back & forth.  Thus if I win innitiative turn one, I will also have it turn 3, 5, 7, etc.  This change takes the luck out of winning or losing innitiative several turns in a row, and allows players to plan their moves accordingly.
Cheers

I know that the weapon traits Sct, Dfs, Dx2, Dx3, & Cts are ignored/irrelevent when firing at fighters, shuttles, drones, & seekers.  How about Tls, & Fcs, not on the target ship, but on ships other than the target of the attacks by fighters, etc.?  I have made a three-hull ship that is an escort to protect other ships from seeker weapons, etc.  This ships "Gattling Guns" are range three, and have {Acr,Fcs,Tls,Rpt}.  If a ship becomes the target of seekers, this small escort then moves to three hexes away and uses these "Gattling Guns" to help defend the target by firing at the attacking seekers, before the targetted ship fires of course.  My question is, does the Tls give these weapons on the small escort three times the shots because it is at long range?  And does Fcs shift the range modifier from SR to LR?
Cheers.

Hello everyone,
My copy of Battleships Armada arrived yesterday.  It is great!  Not only are there the Starmada versions of StarFleetBattles biggest ships, but there are starbases lso as well s some smaller ships.  I like the way ESGs are introduced also.  There are also options to deal with the shielding on these ships that is more like the way that shields are handled in SFB.  Bravo!  This is well done.   8-)

The shields on these ships have letters.  Do the letters correspond to the Shield Level?  Is this the translation?
b=2
c=3
d=4
e=5
f=6

If so, the Super dreadnought is well shielded.

Ah-ha!
This "-4" is all his fault tongue
I wonder what Gaming Glen has to say about this.  (Don't make me design a bunch of cruisers<LOL>) :ugeek:

These are awesome!
Having a -4 to hit these ships will make it a challange to fight them;
Well done! 8-)

I just ordered a copy.
It will be fun seeing "Book Ships" that are larger than, and have a higher CR than my DNs... yikes

I have made three-hull PT Boats with a CR=25.  Their speed is 13.  They are designed to move in and attack when & if opportunity arrises, usually along with other ships.  I tried using these as a trio of one hull ships, but the loss of the first hullpoint/little ship slows down the other two, then the losess of the second hull point/second small ship slows down the last one further if this flotilla procedure is used.  So I just use these inexpensive 3 hull PT boats.

Would there be any approximate ratio of tonnage between a 20 hull ship and a 10 hull? Would it be the square root of the 2:1 ratio so that the 20 hull ship is c1.4 times larger?  Veteran math teacher here; just courious.
BTW, my friends & I here in Florida are having a blast with Starmada.  8-)

PS:  High temp here in Jacksonville will be only in upper 60s; Winter=Brrrr<LOL> tongue

There were DDs in WW2 that were c2,000 tons.  These ships were only 1/16 of the prewar BBs.  But that still makes a big difference.
I think that the exact tonnage ratio from naval ships is not the best comparison for S:NE.  (Although if you compared the 8,000 ton DDGs of the Arliegh Burke class to the 48,000 ton modernized Iowa class BBs, you get a 1/6 ratio.)

Perhaps the Naval terms can still be used, but to show relative size, that is, a CL will be bigger than a DD, which will be bigger than a FF, etc.  How much bigger is up to the ship designer.
BTW, I do like ur idea of the one-hull ship in a flotilla.  I think that these would make good PT boats.
Cheers.

It is cold up here in NE Florida too.  it only warmed up to 65 degrees up here... tongue

What could help to jump-start Starmada is to make/use made ships from StarTrek with appropriate minis and invite people to play at a local game-store using ships & sheets you made.  You may have to run the show for a while, but it could work.  Also, ask the store to advertise a demo for you.  You could use minis of Battlestar Galactica & maybe Babylon 5, etc., with ships from those shows also.
Cheers,
Steven

Former US Navy Gunners-mate here & veteran of the "Cold War" between USA & USSR.
US Navy classification uses abreviations for ships. BB=battleship, CA=heavy cruiser, CL=light cruiser, DD=Destroyer, DE= destroyer escort, and there are others.
BTW, I am definitely a follower of Mahan. 8-)

Actually, my fleets resemble the USA Fleet in WW1.  I think our fleet had more BBs & DNs than cruisers in 1917.

The fleet I usually play consist of DNs that range in size from 49 Hull & 49 Armor to 43 Hull & 43 Armor, speed six.
They are escorted by DDs that usually have 10 Hull & 10 Armor, speed eight or nine.  Theer are gunboats/PT boats with 4 hull & one armor, speed 11+  to keep the other side off balance.

I have designed a couple of cruisers, but just don't enjoy playing them much so I replace them with  DDs.  The only time they get used is in small battles.  These cruisers have 22 hull & 22 armor, speed seven and CR from 300 to 340.

The CR of the DNs ranges from 700 to 600, and the CR of the DDs  is from 150 to 200.  Other than the lack of cruisers, I do bring balanced fleets, the number of DDs usually being double the number of DNs I bring, with some of the smaller ones too.

Could you give us a better example of what you propose and how it would work?  Hopefully one with the front shield stronger.

Couldn't players just do what players did in S:AE?
:idea: Designate one shield facing as the strongest one.  It will always have a shield level one stronger, the two sjield facings beside it would be as written on the ship's SSD, and the other three would be one level weaker.  If done this way, would there be no change to a ship's cost, the owner would need to keep track.
What does everyone else think?

If you combined them, an arguement could be made that a weapon's ROF is tripled at short range, quadroupled at medium range, then tripled at long range.  It would be a costly and most interesting combination, having medium range be the optimim range...
Would this be legal?
