Can you explain what you mean by "acrobatics"?

This is more of a philosophical question than a policy statement, since I don't intend to substantially change MJ12's business model in the near future, but something struck me the other day...

Since January of this year, over 85% of orders for MJ12 products have been of the ebook variety. Even with the POD option through RPGNow/Lulu, we are still seeing electronic copies outsell hard copies by nearly 6 to 1.

Just wondering: aside from getting books into B&M stores via distribution (which we tried once and ended up losing our shirts on), what benefit is there to having printed copies available?

I don't know how they compute that best-selling list -- Defiance has still sold more copies this month than anything else MJ12 has to offer...

Heh... Iron Stars is #1 at RPGNow.com; The Merchant War is #6.

Well, the fonts are still butt-ugly, but I see that Yahoo has added the ability to view the message lists in thread format.

Perhaps they are listening after all... :?

Dude... I LOVE that store! Best game store I have ever been in... except maybe the defunct Bear Productions in Champaign, IL.

I miss the great state of Illinois... sad

For all you ESF fanatics (that's "Edwardian Sci-Fi"... smile ), The Merchant War is now available!

The Merchant War is the first expansion for the Iron Stars miniatures wargame. Herein you will find much to expand upon the basic Iron Stars game, including: A detailed history of the Merchant War of 1908-1909 between the United Kingdom and Austria-Hungary; The introduction of fast attack craft and His Majesty's Space Station Celestial Queen; One dozen new ship designs, including the German Äthermarine and Austro-Hungarian Sternmarine; Six new scenarios covering actions of the Merchant War; More information about Martians by the best-known chronicler of the Invasion, H. G. Wells; Additional rules for combat, including crew casualties and searchlights; New special equipment, such as machine guns and poison gas; Errata for the original Iron Stars rulebook; and rules for including freighters and Q-ships in your games.

On the right edge of the front and back cover there is about a 3/8" white band, and on the bottom edge of the book there is about a 1/16" white band.  Im curious if the cover image is the wrong size? or did they print it wrong?

Anyone else's book have the white space?

My suspicion is that this is due to the fact that the files are formatted to 8.25" by 10.75", while the printers only produce 8.5" x 11" books.

Even with the bleed we provide, it appears there is an issue with lining it up properly -- my copy of Defiance has the same problem.

I'm hoping to upload some files of a corrected size so that this won't happen in the future. But this means we can't use the same files for our traditional printer as we do for Lulu... sad

...what, exactly, IS The Sovereign Stars? Can you use this without Twilight Imperium?

Actually, it depends.

I believe Rich's reply was based off the first edition, which was indeed a stand-alone game which could be used as a campaign generator for Starmada.

However, the version currently available via RPGNow is the second edition, and it does indeed require Twilight Imperium (1st Ed.) to play.

It's been "out of print" for years, so likely you'd only want it for the sake of its "collector's value"... smile

Seriously, I am in the middle of a revision -- look for a third edition in the next few months... ?

Could you have non-hull hits by poison gas or other crew casualty inflicting weapons (IE -- if it hits the secondaries, primaries, light guns or armor) simply be ignored?

I had been considering such an idea... but I wasn't sure if this would go too far the other way and make poison gas useless.

I got the chance to do some final testing of The Merchant War this weekend, thanks to Jim and Mike and Mike and Noel... wink

Looks like the thing is pretty much good to go. One question that has come up in my own mind, however, is the way in which crew casualties are being handled. Right now, the mechanic is the same as for Starmada X (i.e., a crew casualty weapon automatically does a "hull" hit which can be overlapped by real hull damage).

In SX, this is relatively easy to point-cost, since the percentage of hull hits is constant across ship designs. However, in IS, a ship can have as little as 25% or as much as 70% of its damage location track devoted to hull hits. This variation leads to crew casualty weapons being MUCH more effective against smaller targets.

Is this a problem? I don't know... Matt says no, but I'm still wondering.

So I ask the group: any ideas?

1-when your boarding marines roll against defending crew (NOT marines/security teams), do they still lose a squad on a '1'? (I'd say no)

Yes. The BPs' roll is unchanged by the presence or absence of defending marines/SFs; the latter merely allow the defenders the chance to actively return fire.

2-are the attacker/defender rolls simultaneous? (I'd say yes/hope so/should be)

Yes.

3-no 'to-hit' is necessary for the boarding pods; only PEN roll (I'm 99% positive that's a yes- and I do know that the rolls are made Vs FULL shield value, not half like fighters... I did look over the FAQ!!!)

BPs do need to make a to-hit roll. It is 5+, just like fighters.

4-If I use the example provided on P.29 C.16.1; The lone boarding party that made it can fight onboard for how long/how many turns? Does it make its roll and then is considered 'spent' (regardless of the result) or gets to stay on board and make one roll every turn? (until all crew are dead)

BPs fight until they are eliminated, either by a roll of 1 on their own or by a roll of 5 or 6 by an opposing marine squad/SF.

Dan

4B-say you have 6 boarding parties and 4 security teams; In the End Phase the 6 invaders kill 2 sec teams and lose 1 party (roll of 1) while the sec team kills 1 invader and lose 1 sec team (roll of 1); then you have  4 invaders remaining, and 1 sec team - now the question is, do they go for another round of rolls in the SAME End Phase until either ALL boarders are repelled or ALL sec teams (or defending marines) are killed off; OR does the other round of fighting occurs in the FOLLOWING End Phase? (mmh I lean towards the former but it's pretty 50-50)

Thanks!

on ship designs that are given book a battery appears to contain multiple weapons sometimes with the same arc sometimes with diffrent ones. my question is how do I show this on the spread sheet, not so much the arc but the multiple weapons in  a battery? Does this help?

Ahh.... I see.

Essentially, you enter in the arc designations into separate boxes on the spreadsheet. For example, if I want three weapons that each fire into the "AB" arc, I would enter "AB" into each of the first three boxes on the "Firing Arcs" line of the spreadsheet.

But I've got a slight problem with the IS hull victory point talley. As I see it, hull victory points might be partially strategic as well, so that ships with light damage need some time in the slipways, and for that time the others can avoid that ship. And, if Im not mistaken, heavy damage took far longer to repair than light damage.

This may be true, but from a simplicity perspective, I think having a single HVP value would be enough to do what we're looking for.

An expendable weapon must be marked as "destroyed" once it has been fired.

2.  and this might show my ingnorance of the rules but how do you show multiple guns in a battery. I know that all weapons in a battery have to have the same stats and all but how do I get more than one to show up in the numbers?

I'm not sure what you're asking?
