Let me know if you would like to try a quick game via Vassal. I am always eager to expand the pool of players using Vassal to play this game.  smile

It's Cousteau, you fool.

Did you download and install Vassal? Then you need to download the Starmada module for Vassal and run it at least once (if Vassal is installed, just double-click on it). The files I have posted here are zipped because the forum requires that, so you will need to unzip the turn files. Once unzipped, you can double-click on them and they will open Vassal and the Starmada module and allow you to watch the turn.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Okay, the next round has been partially fought. Some quick maneuvering by the Arcturans have given them another shot with one of their very effective big guns (They keep hitting!!!! What lucky bullsh*t!). Of course, as you shall see, the lucky hit dice have resulted in severe damage to the Terran systems but hardly any damage to the actual HULL.    :x

I have posted both the Terran move and the Arcturan move and fire. We await the Terran response, which likely will be pretty devastating.

We came in closer... but not close enough for those pesky little shooters... The Terrans missed. The Arcturans landed a crippling blow! Well, except there was very little hull damage and no weapon damage.  :x

Is anyone enjoying watching this on Vassal? Shall I continue posting my turn files?

I am watching, pity it is one sided though. Like a tv series missing every other episode.

Hmmm.... oh, yeah. Well, on Monday (when I have access to all my files), I can post both sides' files.

Good thoughts. A weapon that can be overcharged and possibly destroy itself when used and a self-destruct device could both be easily worked into the game, I think.

Lost a main battery... Moved my ship a bit closer to the enemy. Realized, a little late, that his short range guns are much better than my short range guns.

Me neither! Although, obviously, your opinion matters much more.  big_smile

Turn 3 maneuvering and this time I open fire first.... and miss.

I believe, at least in WW1, subs were generally steered clear of friendly naval forces and ordered not to engage in areas where friendly naval forces were operating. A friendly fire incident of that magnitude would be horrendous!

Looking forward to the Frenglish account!  lol

The Terran gunners spent the turn finding the range. The Arcturan gunners must have said a prayer -- and it was answered!

Ooooh... good idea, Nomad! Yes, projected Fire Control and Countermeasures have a great many precedents in the genre. Plus, you know the enemy would be gunning for your ECM ship.

Not to mention there might be a hyper-space field that allows a larger ship to "pull" smaller ships through hyperspace with it. Could make it costlier than regular hyperspace and allow attack boat-type craft to begin play adjacent to the carrier. They could also then only warp out if adjacent to a departing ship.

Just a thought. It's long lost but I know I read some novel at some point in which this was the way small non-warp capable ships traveled.

For those who wish to follow the match... my first turn of movement is attached. Again, it's a zip file, so it needs to be extracted first.

Actually, I just emailed you directly, so now you have my email.

Here is the Arcturan setup. It's in a zip file, so you need to unzip it before opening it in Vassal.

I followed a naming convention to keep our turns straight. Game1 001 Arcturan Setup is mine. So your return file would be Game1 002 Terran Setup. This will help keep files straight. I will PM you my email address to make file exchange easier.

Let me know if you have any questions!

For those watching, I think I will continue to post my files here so you can follow along and maybe get hooked on Vassal play.  wink

Looks like the Kyouwa-class Arcturan cruiser, although it comes in with more points than the Belligerent (226 vs. 209), so if I win, you always have an excuse.  big_smile

PBEM is all that really works for me. I will pick a ship and set up the Vassal file and send it to you later today.

Yeah, the ISS book works, too, if you have it. If all you have is the core rules, though, we can use those.

One ship is fine. We can pick a couple with similar point values and claw at each other.

As the developer for the Vassal version, I am always ready to encourage people to try it.  smile

Let's try a small scenario with some published ships from the Core Rules. What do you say?

Well, as the rules don't say that LOS is required, then you'll just have to accept what happened to you.

However, I would be supportive of adding such a rule -- I'm sure it was my intent (or would have been if I'd thought about it).

Well, since I was the doer and not the doee, it worked out to my opponent's benefit. I declared from high atop my high horse, standing on a soapbox, that the rule should probably be LOS and so I placed my mines accordingly, rather than in the optimal, unsighted hex.

I just thought it was worth bringing up for future editions, or something.

I've always played it as the mines being placed in a hex that the ship has passed through during the movement phase of the turn they are to be layed.

Heresy! Burn him!  wink

The rules don't seem to stipulate that a ship needs LOS in order to place mines. Should it be required? This rarely an issue but asteroids and planets can cause this question to be raised. As happened to me today.  smile

Good feedback. I'll take the advice and plan on revising the rules today or tomorrow. I think I'll at a minimum limit the dust storms, nebulas and black holes a fair bit. I'll post what I come up with.

That's a good idea. The far out effects of those should probably be encountered less than empty space, asteroids or planets.
