Thanks for the heads up!

I'll get the games and hunt up that PDF.  I didn't see it when I downloaded from the Majestic XII website.  Is that the one you are thinking about?

The pdf is in the shipyard files on both Yahoo groups, mj12 and VBAM.

Tyrel, What about the shipyad small craft sheet? I think I had a fair go at providing VBAM fighter stats for Starmada AE. I would welcome any thoughts on these.
Seems I do not get much feed back unless I fluff something. Does no comment mean I must be doing something right?

Basic needs for VBAM is the campaign guide and VBAM the Starmada Edition.

Take a look at the "How To" pdf that goes with the Shipyard. I put a page of Starmada AE requirements for VBAM ships.
If you use the shipyard it will give the VBAM stats.

You should have no problems using it with open office, I have been updating the shipyard with it for a few years now.
If you spot anything which is confusing or looks wrong just let me know.

Hope that you like the shipyard, it can look a bit busy as all of the workings are visible. Have you had a look at the pdf for the shipyard yet?

I am trying to use the Shipyard (4c) but it is not calculating SU used or SU remaining and it is also not calculating CR. Is this to-be-implemented or did I do something wrong?

I am simply opening the sheet and looking at the sample Victory Class Heavy Cruiser.

Thanks

You did nothing wrong, Microsoft did. I use Open Office calc and save the shipyard as .xls (Excel 97/2000/XP compatible.) This has worked fine until Excel was re-written recently. For some reason the new Excel changes how some of the calculations are handled. I understand that these are indicated by small triangles. See earlier threads, changing numbers back from being "Text" sometimes works.

Due to this some people use Open Office for the shipyard. It is free from openoffice.org or if you are in the UK, Computer Shopper has version 2.4 on the DVD. It is a complete package, Calc (Spreadsheet), Writer, draw, a database and presentation.

One thing I did not mention about counters.

You can get sheets of Steel paper, Hole punch them and with magnetic sheet on the back of the counters - Fleets in a folder!

Hi,

I downloaded the Shipyard and really enjoy it.  While using it I found a couple of things I recommend.

First when using Ammo the OCR incorrect on Template tab, column AX.  It calculates the SU as if the weapon has no ammo.  I corrected the SU by taking the Final SU Cost/Tech Modifier in the formula.

On the Text Tab it doesn't show the total number of weapons.  To correct it I just linked to the cell in Template tab that shows all of the weapons.  Example for Battery X I link cell  A10 on the Text tab to cell C157 on the Template tab.

Regards,
Denby

Thanks for the feed back.
I should check the shipyard at times other than Midnight or later. It has grown into a bit of a beast and I miss things at times. It still has some things from Starmada X just waiting to be re activated (like ablative armor, which could be used as strengthened hull integrity etc.)

The Text sheet should have been linked, as you say, to the Template sheet in this manner (Much easier). Note though that it is Two lines for each battery. You need Template.$C$157&Template.$C$158 for X battery.

Would have posted the corrected shipyard earlier, been having trouble getting onto the files page at yahoo (Two HOURS later.)

sure....you say that now!  Wait til after the floor joists start cracking due to pewter weight!  lol[/quote]

I can relate to this. First models I bought were Leicester Micro Model ships in 1/4800 and tanks in 1/300. (Not much in the way of details on the ships and the tank barrels were wire.) Many years later I concluded that shifting lbs of miniatures is not good for people let alone joists!

That is why I have gone back to the 60's, making my own counters. I am sure that back then I was quicker with pen and paint than I am with Paint shop pro!

I would be happy with dorsal views of the ships. It would make life easier.
Making a top down counter from a 3/4 view takes time and a lot of guess work for the parts that cannot be seen in a picture.

Even though underneath the rules for boarding pods they are listed as 5+...

Hmm.

That is odd. I bought the pdf version as soon as it was available, page 38 under Boarding pods states:
A standard flight of boarding pods has a size of 6, a speed of 10, an attack value of 4+, and no defence rating.

There is no list between Boarding Pods on page 38 and Teleporters on page 39.

It is no big deal, I have corrected the shipyard.
Does the printed version differ from the pdf? I wonder.

On the small craft sheet please change Boarding Pods Attack Value to 5 not 4 and change the figure in cell M69 to 18.

See reply in Boarding Pods thread.

Any Shipyard downloads from now will have this fixed.(From v4a)

I forgot to mention that the text sheet also shows Dual-mode figure but only the one permitted Range (This should be the first mode choice.

The Dual-Mode weapons may make some B5 fans happy.
PDF also updated.

I may be missing the point but that just seems to be one battery with all weapons fire linked only able to fire at one target.

The Battery can take multiple hits (depending on number of weapons).
The Battery has gradually degraded performance with the loss of each weapon.

Is there a need for a new weapon type? The only change needed would be a single target trait.

Talking of Tenders, I had added this to the shipyard for VBAM users. From the VBAM details:
Tender = Included in equipment, 1 level for each choice of Tender. For each level, the ship can can Dock 1 Attack Boat (Hull 1) or 2 Super Heavy fighters.

150SU per level, OCR=25 DCR(+)=25

Okay,
thanks Dan,
I'm kind of relieved. I was going nuts there.

No, not going nuts.
It is the Shipyard that has a sheet for designing custom Fighters etc. This is on the Yahoo groups MJ12 site. There is a fair amount of other things like conversions also on that site.

If you do not want to sign up to Yahoo Groups and wish to give the Shipyard a go, email me and I will send you version 3.4. Also the short "How To" pdf that goes with it.

Maybe we should start a thread highlighting the tactics of each race, and look at the flavor of the game from there... it might help with ideas on making the conversion work.

John

Why bother? SFB has used whole forests printing tactics by and for players. Every uber weapon has been studied, picked over and then been out done.

I wonder why nobody has even questioned if such a conversion is needed. Starmada in it's various forms has already given rise to Star Trek games and conversions both SFB and FASA. OK not "official" but are they any the worse for that.

Change the way Starmada works and it is just SFB by another name.

Even in this thread it seems that SFB thinking has started. Should it be change Starmada to SFB or change SFB to fit in with Starmada?

Just playing devils advocate. But stop to think, Starmada X was pared down to make Starmada AE more playable. There are plenty of choices already which seem to cover any type of weapon. Maybe just another couple of traits and strikers?

Do we really want more complexity and book keeping?

You could try the shipyard, Up to Five weapon types per ship plus a Spinal Mount.
All included on the weapon damage chart.

As a certain Captain in the Home Guard would say "I wondered if you'd spot that"

Down to me. Failing memory and changing things on the spreadsheet after 2am.
I had changed the ROF and ACC around from earlier versions and forgot to carry the change through.
Oops had the wrong line in a couple of cells in the Starmada BITS.

I think that I have fixed them (It is 3.58am here) V3.3 uploaded.
Also added VBAM Campaign specific ship (Passengers, Tender & Jammer).
Will add these to the How to pdf when I have time.

Thanks for taking the time to point out the errors.

Thanks for the input.
I overlooked the Stars Divided sxca that comes with the book download.
That has Atmospheric as 20% Hull SU.
I do not know where this calculation comes from as I can not find the figure in the rules.

Hi Jonas,
Pleased that the How to is understandable. A picture can explain details better than trying to in just words.
By the way, the Ship on the last page is a Bitmap saved from the Starmada sheet.

Must mean that the Excel is changing some of the cell formats.
Probably somewhere in the template sheet block from AX8 to BC38.
The Calculations from the template sheet are copied over onto the text and starmada ship sheets so the problem is not there. Sometimes a different version of Excel need only change one little thing and errors crop up all over.

Sometimes I just hate spreadsheets. Found another quirk yesterday that was stopping the small craft traits from working properly!

Check out OpenOffice.org, there may be a version of Open Office calc that you can use. Quite a few people use it, maybe as it is free.

I keep the shipyard as Microsoft Excel 97/2000/xp.

Revamped the way that some of the VBAM stats are calculated. Some clashed due to the change from Starmada X to AE.
Added a page to the Shipyard pdf for VBAM ships.

Just uploaded New Shipyard v3.2 and how to pdf V2 to go with it.

HI Jonas

These come at the end of all other calculations. Somewhere else on the template sheet there must be a N/A or error shown.

Is it possible for you to list what you have entered?

If you are getting the N/A on opening the shipyard (with the example intact) then it is the excel version making changes to how it works.

Dan,
The shipyard allows for VBAM ships to be Atmosphere capable via Engines greater than hull and engines of tech level+2.

VBAM:SE gives a third option, Special atmospheric equipment but does not give SU or CR details for streamlining, aeorodynamic qualities.

Any thoughts?
I think that there should be a hull size limit for Winged ships.
