Crew modifiers would be interesting. I know that Jay's VBAM/SX book touched on that for purposes of VBAM conversions, but I have been tempted to sit down and try to match up the Companion officer abilities to SX to get an idea for how that would work. A dedicated system of rules specifically for SX would be a nice addition, though.

A "black book" supplement that included expanded technologies in areas wehre it is viable would be nice. As Cartman mentioned, unreliable/weakened technologies would be a nice addition, though mostly I see it being beneficial for campaigns. Similarly, looking at the systems I can see generational PDS, drones, and mines being a possibility. Again, their utility is limited to campaign play, so as a stand alone supplement is probably would not constitute enough material.

I think the one avenue that SX has for new releases is likely in the form of universe books and ship lists. Put together a nice, full supplement with background, ships, and scenarios and you would probably have it made.

I have talked to Dan about doing a SX crossover for the Escalation Wars stuff, particularly getting things ready so that there could be a SX ship book release at the same time the VBAM war history is released. In a book like that, you would be looking at a good 250+ ships, more than likely, covering a three-hundred year period in the setting.

The only other thing I would have on a wish list is an even more advanced, detailed method of designing fighters. Setup a system where fighters are considered a weapon system maybe, so that they could potentially have variable Movement Range, ROF, PEN, DMG, and maybe some special effects. The basic and custom fighter rules are nice, but I am still left wanting something a bit more meaty so that fighters can be more variable in abilities.

That's what I did as an option in my heavily modified VBAM/SX spreadsheet I am using in the Solar Federation campaign. I called it "Weakened Hull Plating" or something to that effect. It works as you described above, and returns a percentage of SUs comparable to what Armor Plating usually takes away.

So far it has not been used too much, though in the testing I did it made it viable for the very primitive low tech powers (my TL -3 guys) to build actual starships. Otherwise they were having a hard time building anything worthwhile.

A partial update...

I have uploaded a copy of all of my working files (minus the diary, which I PDF'd for everyone's benefit -- 3MB Word docs aren't fun to fling around) into a single zip for people to look at and use. The address is:

http://planetside.firenebula.com/sx/sol2.zip

It is about 3MB anyway, so be warned! It includes everything, so it should give you an idea of where things are at and how things are going.

One thing people will notice is that I have created a new, standardized sheet for the new ships that is based on the old XLS, but with a few tweaks beyond even my original tweaks. Construction costs were tweaked after I discovered that there was a bug that kept corvettes at Cost 2 when they really should be Cost 1 (to be conducive to VBAM stats), and I also rounded up the AS/AF since I thought those values were sometimes not converting quite right, either. So now any weapon will likely get you at least AF 1 AS 1 with Starmada-ville ships.

I have another race on the map that I am thinking of adding, but I might hold off until the end of the campaign year. I am also thinking about forgoing them and instead adding either a machine-intelligence or a hydrogen-environment gas giant alien. The machine-intelligence, if added, would come in on a mothership equipped with construction bays and remote mining equipment, which would allow it to act like mobile Productivity (but with the caveat that all remote mining would be strip mining my default!).

I haven't decided which route to take just yet, so we will wait and see. Luckily, the Kaluest and Orchar both love the Humans. The Secrona are warming up to us, too, so it is looking to be good times to be a human.

I hope to possibly zip everything up and upload tomorrow sometime, after I get Starlight turns finished and a few other things done. At about 55 pages so far, and the Secrona War has both started and ended since the last update.

I am probably going to tweak the Macro tech research increase from 5x normal to 4x. 5x is a little much, but still much better than the 1x from the Starmada Edition book (as far as my play style and assumptions on the tech system go).

Researching weapons separately as directed research projects has worked well. It forces you to think ahead, which is always good. It also keeps a players from deploying wild new gadgets or weapon variations without putting some investment into it.

I will likely implement a prototyping system for them, too, just to make things interesting. Probably something roughly like Jay's main prototype rules from the book, but with any positive effect being an A-OK result, and the others just meaning that the research project failed to be achieved and needs several more turns to actually complete successfully.

After talking with Charlie, I also decided to change the main prototyping chart for this campaign around a bit. Basically everything gets shifted down one spot, with the 1st slot now being a perfect result, plus a maintenance bonus (woo hoo!) and the 9th slot (now 10th) requiring a re-roll (d10); on 1-5, you get the current 9, on 6-10 you get the current 10. I am just really sick of that 10% chance of my prototypes exploding effecting almost every unit I try to prototype. This has happened across three campaigns, usually on prototypes that cost 10+ EP to build and/or take years to complete. Bah, I say, bah!

Things are getting interesting. So far there have been two more alien contacts, one IND-2 (but nearly IND-3) and another IND-3. So it could get pretty interesting in the future.

Unless something else comes up by the end of this campaign year I will probably introduce a new INT-1 power into the campaign on 2206.1 just to liven things up a bit and add a third wheel to challenge Terran and Secrona domination of these lesser species.

I have posted up a copy of my campaign diary, for those that want to read up on what has been happening so far in this second VBAM/SX campaign. You can grab it from the following address:

http://planetside.firenebula.com/sx/Sol … n_2204.pdf

Right now it is just a mix of rambling rules (none of them finished, just works in progress), the diary, and some background notes that I have created thus far. The style of the diary is in the form of the VBAM/SX book, because I thought it would be neat to try and simulate the layout and thought it would be apropos to the audience smile

Most of the Solar Federation ships listed in there section aren't actually used and will probably be removed. They were just some notes on really old ships before I decided to not use them.

As for the actual SX ship designs, sometime later this weekend I will go in and zip them up and put them up in that folder for people that might be interested in them.

Unfortunately, the Solar Federation has no better luck than the Solar Federation, and are in a war already -- you can only guess with who after reading the diary!

Thematically, I think such options are good to have around.

I did something similar with a piece of "Exposed Engines" special equipment I needed for a set of lower tech ships that needed to capture the essence of the aft-mounted engines found on some Babylon 5 Wars ships I was converting over. I forget what values I used, but it works along the same way that it gives up some space (based on size of engines in this case), but each Engine hit makes a roll, with another engine being destroyed on a '5' or '6'.

But for fitting a specific racial theme it is excellent. It would also be good in a campaign, since it would allow some younger races to get away with a little bit better ships, but at the risk that a good hit is going to make them crumple like tinfoil.

Despite the best efforts of Earth, the campaign has largely played itself out at this point. The Solar League was able to repel the Altairians from Barnard's Star and began pursuing them to Cygni... only to have the fleet cut to ribbons -- again. Without any real resistance remaining, the Altairians rolled back into Cygni. I didn't fight the battle, but the Solar League just didn't have anything left to really fight with. The Repulse had been rebuilt as a Renown-class Battlecruiser, but that ship alone wasn't going to turn the tide. With Barnard's defenses destroyed for a second time, the Altairians were free to hit Earth.

Before the end, humanity found another species, but they were not overly friendly, so it would taken "an act of CM" to have them appear as allies and friends. Too bad, we could have used their ships to help defend Sol.

I think I am going to restart the campaign and see what happens a second time around. Hopefully my luck will be much better this time! It was incredibly poor luck that I got killed this time, but such things happen.

So off to an alternate reality we go!

I will take the lessons learned this time around, though, and apply them to the next campaign. One thing I think I will do for this next campaign is make individual weapon systems (sans ROF) into separate Micro tech advances, just to make them more interesting. I will also be increasing the research cost for Macro tech investments considerably, since otherwise I could see a race going from crap-tech to super-tech within only a decade or so, if left alone to its own devices.

Guess what? The Solar League made its tech advance. The array looked like this:

1    Halves Shields
2    Ignores Shields
3    No Range Modifiers
4    Fighters: Assault
5    Shield Resonant

Gess what I rolled? Yes, a '4'. No shield tech beaters for me! Not for another two years! Sigh.  I could *possibly* get one as soon as next year, but it is doubtful.

Not to dredge up an old topic, but so far in my SX campaign I have just have starbases be ships without engines of any kind, but they are still allowed to "rotate" (turn) one hexside per turn using their station keeping drives. This is entirely a home rule thing, but I thought it was fair, especially coming off of Babylon 5 Wars where such operations are common.

First off, your campaign sounds quite cool, and is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to see/hear from the VBAM-Starmada collaboration.  big_smile

It is nice to have a tactical system directly integrated, and one with a tight ship construction system to boot wink I thought this would probably be the only way I would get well-aquainted with the S:X rules smile

So the vote seems to be for the deployment of an Extra Hull Damage + Increased PEN weapon with high ROF. Unfortunately for mounting options, a heavily refitted Sun Quan CL is looking like the only legitimate prospect, which isn't a good sign. I think prototyping a new ship is going to be in order to get this done, especially if I want to slip a Stealth Generator onboard, too.

As for stripping off hyperdrives... well, you see, that is another problem with my fleet now. Only my Repulse BCs, my Prometheus EXs, and one old class of CA have hyperdrives. Which is going to make things dicey, as that means that the only travel is now by jump gate, unless I can get Mitch Pileggi and the UES Daedalus back from exploration in Ross 154 (or wherever it is he is out passed Alpha Centauri).

Taltos wrote:

At first thought... weapons that ignore shields would remove part of your problem and then reduce the issue only to PDS. But as you have already pointed out you are out of time to research and prototype a new weapon system.

I have loaded the chart with all of the options, so in three months I should (crosses fingers) hopefully have at least one of them, which will help me out immensely. Though prototyping a new ship with the weapon is probably out of the question, and building refits of other classes can get extremely expensive (and I am even using a modified version of the VBAM: SX refit rules, so things are a bit costlier besides).

Taltos wrote:

I know with the xenophobic any attempt to force diplomacy on them is probably tough, but I would screaming for a ceasefire and a treaty, no matter how much it favored the aliens.

The situation with the Altairians would be funny if not for the fact that it is happening to me. As far as AIX statistics go, they are AG 32, IN 26, XE 73 (stats are Aggressiveness, Integrity, and Xenophobia in that order, for those without the Companion). So at AG 32 the Altairians shouldn't be all that hostile towards me. They really should love me. But I ended up with a starting relationship of 16 with them, and then the Altairians rolled a negative Critical Diplomatic Shift and instantly declared hostilities and decided to come and gobble me up. Our current relationship, influenced solely by the NPE rules, is -2. Yes, a negative relationship. Sigh.

Taltos wrote:

And get ready to rip those buoys... the human race may depend on it.

I have a feeling that is going to be the case. I had hoped to find a backdoor into their empire so that I could open up another front, but that is looking unlikely. It is just really sad that Barnard's Star was my largest, most heavily populated system outside of Sol itself (5 Census in Barnard, which based on population densities would be about 150,000 to 200,000 people).

Did I mention that the Altairians have jump-capable stealth fighters?

Oi.

As for the other suggestions...

Yes, min-maxing is bad, but I am weeping for the security of Earth so I just got desperate! wink So a large number of less effective weapons (as Dan posted) might be preferrential to loading up on smaller numbers quality weapons? I might have to give it a try on the Tribal Hull and see what comes out of it. I might even prototype a new Tribal successor with some of those technologies onboard. I also have a newer frigate design, but I am not sure how well it would have faired since its nearly-complete final prototype was destroyed by the Altairians when they took Gibraltar.

Yeah, the Eagle CA is undergunned, but its defenses have made it extremely difficult to crack, especially for our largley Energy beam armament coming into the war. We are transitioning towards a Kinetic/Ballistic mix at the moment. But with the PDS systems even that doesn't help us out all that much.

Bombers? Yeah, that would be nice. But I don't have any sad *weep* I have Arrow light fighters that, while minimally effective, have suffered outrageous attrition rates against the enemy Nighthawk Stealth fighters. I am just waiting for the Altairians to go all Strak'ha on me and develop a successor Nighthawk that adds Ballistic capabilities and can load some sort of killer torpedo weapon as special equipment. Then I most assuredly will cry.

I will see what I can do with these options. The Repulse will likely be refitted heavily and outfitted with some of the weapons that have been proffered on possibilities.

BTW, I thought I had to be missing something in relation to the PDS/Redundant Shielding combo, and obviously I was. Okay, so the Redundant Shielding just protects your Shield value from taking damage on a *Shield Hit*, not *Shield Roll*. Okay. The two terms were close enough I was thinking they were the same thing. But one is PEN related and one is damage allocation related. Okay.

That makes me feel better.

I have been playing a solo VBAM: Starmada campaign this last week and a half, and a few questions have come up. My Solar League has run into some problems with the Altairians, the natives of the star Altair and our first interstellar contact. You see, despite not being violent the Altairians are nonetheless extremely xenophobic and they hate humanity with a vengeance.

Now that isn't necessarily that big of a problem, really. But the problem (at least for us) has come in the form of the Altairians Point-Defense Systems (PDS) which my League Navy just can't seem to beat. This campaign is using the KEB defense system from the Starmada Edition book, and the Altairians have on average 2/4/2 respectively for Defense/Shield values.

After playing a few battles and trying to figure out a good strategy, the League Navy tried to adapt by focusing on a breed of light cruiser (Sun Quan class) that would have a more kinetic-heavy armament. Still, though, our luck has been lacking. Our larger Repulse battlecruisers were meeting some success, but they relied too much on energy weapons (doh!) and have since been largely destroyed (of the 5 or 6 built, only UES Repulse has survied; Maelstrom, Thunderer, and the other thips of the class have all been destroyed in battle).

So this is an open call for suggestions smile What would be the optimal ship or weapon design to combat enemy point defenses? The Humans are currently attempting to achieve one of the shield-affecting weapon modification breakthroughs, but we are not holding our breath. The enemy has repulsed the League's attempt to retake 61 Cygni, and after several months has moved on and successfully defeated our forces at Barnard's Star in the Battle of Gibraltar.

The League Navy currently has a tech level of -1 in all areas, and have the following micro advancements available: Extra Hull Damage, Increased PEN, Anti-Fighter Batteries, Decoys, Stealth Generator, Hyperdrive.

Basically I thought it might be good to get some ideas and feedback from the S:X veterans to see if there are any magic rabbits or optimal strategies for dealing with PDS-equipped ships such as these, or what my best course of action would be. My admiral avatar is jonesing to just destroy the nav buoys from Sol to Barnard's Star and write the Takiwara and New Gibraltar colonies there off as a loss, but that isn't an option. There are several promising designs on the drawing board, but the time to prototype them is going to be insane. We have noticed that the Altairians have a distinct weakness to fighters, so Forrestal CVL production is going to get increased, but our Ark Royal CVA prototype is still several months from completion, and given my luck is going to blow up when they try to spin up its reactor for the first time (I have had this happen enough times in other campaigns I expect the worst luck possible!).

For the moment, the League is just going to have to put its faith in the (craptastic) Tribal destroyers that can be built on the ground without shipyard support. All of the solar colonies are building Tribals (except for the moons of Saturn, which don't have the industrial infrastructure to do so).

Another thing: in looking to the PDS system and what to do about it, I came upon a scary combination that I would like some feedback on. The PDS affects hits on unmodified rolls of 1, 3, or 5; and Redundant Shielding affects them on 5 and 6, correct? So what happens with a ship that has 4-5 Shields and both of these special equipments? Do you just hope you have a shield-negating weapon, or are you just screwed? I was wondering if I was missing something there.

Sorry if any of the above bored you absolutely to tears. I know I will be crying when the Altairians perform anti-population bombardment on Gibraltar next turn. And unbeknownst to my side, our admiral in the Battle of Gibraltar, Vice-Admiral Karina Aylwin, was not killed onboard the UES Maelstrom but survived and has been captured by the Altairians. Now THOSE guys are purchasing Intel resources to use to "turn" her to their side, so that she can lead the final assault on Earth. Nice guys, aren't the?

I just don't know how I managed to find such a mean NPE for my first contact. And I even cheated them on starting resources! And they are still killing me! Though I have found my biggest problem is that the League is a Representative government (from the Menagerie Custom Race Design rules), so they can only spend 50% of their income on wartime production. That has been a nuisance for me lately, but my shipyards have been habitually to the max anyway, so I am not sure that it can be blamed for my situation.

I thought AV:T sounded somewhat interesting prior to release, but I just couldn't justify spending $50 on a game I would either not like or never learn to play (that is the same reason I have all but given up on computer gaming; after a few $40-50 bombs you decide that pewter is a better investment). Personally, though, everything that I have heard since then in relation to the amount of time that it takes to play, and the fact that more than one or two ships per person is not generally encouraged kind of turned me off of the game.

Of course, I am also biased in the fact that I never liked math in school, and have attempted to avoid it where possible. I love playing with numbers and attempting to find models to match data, but otherwise I just don't want to have to know/perform calculus in order to understand or play a game. AV:T simplifies it from what I have heard, but Ken has also mentioned that calculus is really required to understand the reasoning behind all of the mechanics. From my second hand information, AV:T is more of an edutainment title than what I would consider a fun game, but until it goes on sale or I decide I really need it, I won't know for sure wink

I am waiting and hope to see how Todd Boyce's With Hostile Intent turns out, as it sounds like it should be more appealing to the B5W crowd, so a bit closer to what Starmada players would be comfortable with, too.

The book is 8.5x11. Lulu only does two or three sizes, to they either scale up or down as desired. I have noticed that the books that we had printed through another printer for distribution print at the smaller size, so it is an oddity.

I just thought that I would pass along word that my copy of Grand Fleets from Lulu came in today, and it looks good! Dan, did you use RGB or CMYK color on that cover, because it came out looking very nice.

The interiors are nice as well, and everything seems crisp and clear. The paper and binding quality is the same as the other Lulu books that I have seen so far, so that is all par for the course.

A really nice looking book!

I believe that the 1/4" variation is only in relation to bleeds. So you could put up to 1/4" bleeds on whatever project you submitted, but not anything more than that. Otherwise, yes, the book size is limited to 8.5" x 11" or 6" x 9".

I know there are some issues with Lulu as far as their instructions go. The covers were one place where I wasn't quite sure what the green bar that went around was trying to tell me -- whether that was the bleed, or would be chopped off, or what. But you live and learn! Part of the reason it is good to setup a secondary Lulu account just to test some of the things out to make sure they will work right when RPGNow gets around to inputting the information (I hope that goes smoothly).

One other benefit in a roundabout way of setting up a separate Lulu store is that you can also offer alternative printings for the customers, be it spiral instead of perfect bound or full-color instead of just a greyscale printing.

Like any printer (POD or offset), it takes a little bit of time to get used to how they want files processed. But in Lulu's case, you can at least get a reasonable idea of what they *think* they have to print off of! smile

The $10 USD shipping for international packages is a Lulu thing, I found. Shipments to Canada gets screwed similarly, so you are definitely not alone.

In cases like that, it would probably be best to convince someone in the states to purchase an extra copy (or two) of the books from Lulu, and then turn around and re-mail them to you. But even then, the cost of shipping will probably hit the $10 mark, so it probably won't help anyone out.

How bad do they try hitting you for having multiple POD books in a single order? It might be a case of ordering everything you want, not to mention everything any of your buddies want, and try to save on shipping a bit there.

What's really funny is if you try ordering the books directly from Lulu; by default, their most expensive shipping rate comes up first. Imagine the shock and horror of getting to the end of the shopping process and seeing a $25 shipping charge in the basket smile Then I realized it was because of the shipping method. But it scared me!

Phew! I was hoping there wasn't a problem there. I know that the Boltian/Kuissian book originally had a cover error through Lulu (pre-RPGNow/Lulu going public, when we were doing some side testing), but I didn't know how the main book ended up turning out from them. I bought a copy of each of our source books through them, just to check those, but haven't went and ordered the Guide itself yet.

One thing I noticed on our books was that the covers seemed to be washed out a bit, likely because of the laminant, but that is fairly minor. That and where the VBAM look is the drab, industrial motif (complete with diamond plate!), it kind of fits smile

I am very interested in seeing how that Grand Fleets cover turns out to be honest, as it will let me see whether it is a CMS problem on my end with the VBAM books. That and I really wanted a copy of that came in print for reference smile

If Dan ever gets the other core books (S:X or SX: Brigade) available through the system, he is guaranteed at least one sale -- though he has hard copies sitting around already, so it will probably be awhile (and I am too lazy to hunt the other copies down!).

BTW, though it is not really consistent with the thread topic, it is nice getting an e-mail digest of the forum messages forwarded on to the Yahoo Group, as then I knew that someone had replied to this thread. Of course, Dan is giving me forum-envy and I will need to figure out more about phpBB to compete! wink
