Another recent thread and the Aracnonoi pdf from a while back had me thinking on system disabling weapons again.
I have been thinking of using the font for a Damage Grid 6 x 6, actually as an alternative to the system in AE but also good for Nova.
You know the type, for each disabled special item hit roll 2 die and consult chart for what takes the hit, Battery, Crew or System. One icon on the grid for each battery originally but in Nova four for shields, weapons and engines and one for each special item like hyperdrive. Large ships could have a grid 6 x 10 if 6 x 6 is not big enough for everything. Throw an empty grid square = Tough luck you just knocked out the drinks dispenser. smile
Found that I could use a few more icons after all. These will be added to the next update.

ECM, Weapons (General) and Crew.
Edit: Thrust icon added.
Thoughts anyone? It is soooo quiet, did I just hear a cricket chirping?

IMP vs DMG: I equated this to a beam vs shot weapon. Higher IMP was more of a beam striking the hull multiple times, as opposed to a Higher DMG which was a one big impact weapon.

Beam or solid shot vs Big Badda Boom on impact.

Continuing Damage: I didn't quite know about this one. Acid came to mind, but would there be a better space-borne example of a weapon?

Slow burn explosive which increases in heat over time or projectile designed to weaken internal structures to the point where they start to give way.

MRCAcct wrote:

Increased Hits/Impacts: I was thinking a B5 "Pulse" weapon, but can that hold true for both traits at the same time?

Multiple warhead which splits just before impact.

MRCAcct wrote:

(Inverted) Range-Based traits: Damage was a pretty easy explanation, and Impact sort of followed suit (ie Laser beam that loses energy as range increases). What about examples for the others though? Especially the inverted ones; what gains power as range increases?.

Projectiles which have a fuel source adding to the kinetic force over distance.

I dare say there are better examples.

Just random thoughts.
If you have factions within a force and they all use the same kind of designs it may appear a little confusing for players or observers (example being overgrown kitty cat furballs from SFU).
Thought. Add a layer to game piece prototype; the individual force one allowing invisibility during movement.
Then add a force or clan symbol graphic to the layer which can be turned on and off.

I think that the OnGsheet1 font has just about every icon I could use on my data cards but are there any things that I have missed and just can not see them?

I last added Fast Attack Craft and when the font is next posted it will have Bomb Rack.
Thoughts anyone?

I wonder what the CR of these ESGs is.  I would add one to each of my ships... 8-)

The CR is dependent upon other factors in both AE and Nova. You could use either The Shipyard (for AE) or Shipyard Nova to make your ship, both have the ESG option. wink

You know if you don't do it someone will ask for it eventually!

I guess but I had no idea if there was anything in the AE version (I bought Nova version) needing the shipyard to be revised.

I WISH that I had been hibernating. For those of us that live somewhere North of Florida the winter has been long, cold, and grey.

No Joke, I think I missed last summer in the UK. Some twit declared a drought last spring and the weather has been bad ever since.

Just at a guess, but most game systems would rather that you spend your hard earned cash on minis, rather than give away cheap counters. (If you haven't ever been there, stop by http://www.richbax.com/ )

I had seen them. I bought B5 counters that Mongoose did in a box set but can not say I am a fan of them.
I keep living in hope that someone will start posting counters like my own. I am not so good at art (see example below) so there must be some good ones out there.

For anyone that has bought the book, The Gatling Phaser Range is 9 (missing from Page 11).
Though having said that it is probably on one of the data cards.

Is it worth buying the Admiralty version?
What am I asking? Is it worth getting to update anything in the shipyard? Would anyone still use the shipyard for SFU Battleships?
Where has everyone gone?
It has been so quiet maybe I missed the hibernation this year. lol
What is everyone working on at the moment?
Why are ship counters (top down that I can put a magnet on the back of) rarer than hens teeth?

My own project has been converting Iron Stars to Nova (at least the RNES for which I have a complete fleet of my own counters and data cards + a few extras) I have been using the pictures a lot as the stats do not always tally. For instance I noticed that the German AZ.3 was given an extra primary turret in the stats.
Eventually they will do battle with the beasties from Saturn that have been eating in the asteroid belt and noticed that some of the other planets have been launching ready to eat packed lunches!

May I second the PDF question please.

It is probably better to ask on the ADB forum.

I usually buy the pdf version but a few times it seemed to take ages before release. Those times I got fed up waiting and bought the printed version. (This is one of those times, bought the book here in the UK)
Downside being when errors are corrected later in the pdf, maybe the Battleships Armada pdf is being re-formatted and that is holding it up?

Can all of expendible seekers in the Drone Racks on the Federation/Klingon/Khazinti ships fire at once?  If so it will be a massive barrage that would resemble a salvo of Capital-ship missiles launched from External-0rdance Racks on Starfire ships...

I like the idea of making Armor into "Shields" and then using half for Front Shields, the FF arc & the other half for the Aft Shields covering nearly all of the AX arc.  Does this change the cost of a ship, that is, can all ships use this option?
Cheers

There does not appear to be a restriction on the number of SFU "Drone Racks" fired in a turn being a weapons battery unlike Nova "Drones" which are a subset of Fighters.

The Front/Aft shields option (if used) would replace the SFU modified Directional Defenses so I imagine the cost would be the same. (That is the way I have done the option in Nova Shipyard.) Can anyone comment on the Drydock using this option?

They are correct in my copy (1.1 April 2012).
Hull 8^1.3 x 60 = 895.71 Round to 896, 40% of this is 358.4 Round to 358
Hull 10^1.3 x 60 = 1197.15 Round to 1197, 50% of this is 598.5 Round to 599

I checked.

Marc

"not realistic" .. muhahahahaha... for a made up game with made up rules, what is "realistic"?  big_smile

And you forgot to say that it's a game about science fiction (ie something that has never happened) with ships that will never be built and obvisouly will never fight. We do not even know when such ship (ie ships that will look like what we can imagine as starships) will ever exit and even if ever there will be starships able to fight in space.
But when I say 'realistic', I suppose a sense of thought and a lot of imagination to determine how such thing should work that way, etc.
For simultaneous play, we can imagine real warships (wet navies) fighting with guns and missiles and IMHO, true simultaenous combat is not realistic. Just to imagine many dreadnought firing at each other in simultaneous way is making me laugh. Good for a game POV, a bit ridiculous otherwise. But it's just my opinion and it's just a game and all that.

Marc

I can not help but wonder what "true simultaneous combat" is as the word means at the same time.
Dreadnoughts did fire at each other at the same time with the shells reportedly passing each other mid way.
Even with the "British sense of fair play" at no time did a captain call the enemy to say "after you old chap, I'll go second". A ship could be doomed not knowing if it had hit the enemy ship. One side only got to fire first if it had a range advantage.

I would say use whichever method of play suits you although combat turns are probably best for new players.
Remember it is a game to be shared and enjoyed, do not get serious and bogged down with technicalities.
Not sure about something, throw a dice and ask Dan later. smile

My 2p worth.

Turn N.
Declare the launching of seekers first in the combat phase calculating AD as normal (taking into account any Active flares etc). Weapons fired at seekers in the same phase use the range to the "Launching" hex.
You should remember that the seeker is not actually sitting there but already on it's way to the target but the process has been simplified so that it is targeted at the beginning and end of it's flight.
Turn N+1.
Seekers resolve their attacks after all other weapons. Weapons fired at seekers during this combat phase use the range to the seekers intended target.

There was the question of Flares. Fired during Turn N and marker placed but are Activated (flipped) for turn N+1.
In the end phase remember to remove all flares that were active during that turn then flip flares that were fired (Launched) in the combat phase to activate them for the next turn.

Oh my... those are brilliant!

Why didn't I know about these sooner!?

How have people printed theirs...? Onto labels? Cardstock? Can an Office Store like Staples grok how to handle these...?

Just about any printers could put them onto 160 gsm card, although I can not say about Staples as I have not used them. That is the thinnest card I have used for them.
My Dell printer can print onto 200 gsm card so I am lucky but a number of "home printers" can print onto thin card.
Of course if you have looked at my pdf files or the odd counter that I have put on the forum it is clear I favor top down views for my counters smile

The official shipbuilder (issb) has to be downloaded as a xls file :
http://www.mj12games.com/ironstars/

My "Iron Shipyard" in the files although an xls file was written using Open Office (which Libre Office used to be).
I thought Libre Office could open Excel files no matter which Operating System it was being used on. :?:

I have uploaded the Iron Shipyard in .ods format (Open Office), which it should open.
PLease let me know if that works.

Paul

95

(14 replies, posted in Starmada)

No, that was perhaps a bad example as the class has minimal shielding (all facets except aft have shield value 6). Each facet can have its' own level of shielding (Nova shield value). The way I play it is that all facets either lose or repair levels at the same time.

Paul

Or use Nova like this and mark off a line instead of the normal number of single shield boxes as per the core rules. big_smile

If you check the chart you will see that these combinations are not applicable/allowed since they are opposites.
In converting AE weapons to Nova this should not come up.
Range based traits were talked about in a thread last year, If there is no figure for the combination you cannot have them.
You can have a Dual Mode weapon which is Diffuse in one mode and Focused in the second mode, but not in the same mode.
When converting weapons from AE to Nova (as can be done in Shipyard Nova) each mode is dealt with separately.

It might have been a nice thought but I can not see ADB wanting to give away future sales of the Nova versions, which are currently the ones being promoted (AE having to be ordered).
