Thanks for the response.
Are there any sample ships that I can use for trying out the game with the sample rules?
Also, how does this compare to Lightning Strike. I am quite fond of the game and EW rules. Can you compare how electronic warfare works in this system.
So I read the sample rules. The game seems okay. How complex is the construction system. The rules kind of remind me of Full Thrust. How many figures are in an average game? How does the game compare to ther starship games?
The starship games I have played include:
Lightning Strike by DP9
Full Thrust
Babylon 5 (Agents of Gaming)
Babylon 5 (Mongoose)
Thanks,
Jonathan
Yeah.. I don't need it to tell me if I am breaking the rules. All I need it to do is figure costs. Heck, make it so I can break the rules. It allows me to take into account house rules and such then.
I need something that will simply speed up the process and reduce the amount of page flipping.
Keep that data cards thing that. That was awsome. I always want my information to look good and be easy to read.
What ever happened with this thing?
This would be very handy for sitting down to make an army. I am really busy and can barely find the time to play much less make an army.
Demian Rose wrote:For those of you who have used the Customizer a bit, or have read it and considered using it, I have a question:
Do you think that a relatively across the board increase/decrease (depending on aspect) on all restrictions of ~50% is a good idea - e.g., maximum PI weapon cost of 40 PV becomes 60 PV, maximum elite percentage of 25% costs 2 instead of 3 SR.
I ask because the most common complaint I receive about Defiance is that the Customizer, while very balanced and consistent, is "almost but not quite" able to allow them to build the armies they want to build.
For me, I always fret about game balance - game designers are want to do that - but maybe this time I was a bit too overly cautious and the system can indeed handle a bit of extra give.
Comments?
No, I do not think it is necessary. It stops infantry from having too powerful of weapons. Maybe another level that can be purchased with tech level, but leave the other levels where they are.
It also seems to not allow Size 3 infantry. I have tried making them from a blank sheet and it still goes all wonky.
agoodall wrote:I looked at Starslayer about three years ago and while it looked interesting, I didn't care much for the mechanics where you had to roll for each individual figure in a squad.
I'm assuming that this mechanic is in Defiance, so I have a question. How big a game can you play of Defiance in a 3 to 4 hour period? Are you limited to about a platoon per side, or can it actually handle a company per side?
Things die pretty quickly in Defiance. Basically, I was able to play a 1000 point game in about 50 minutes and I was teaching someone the game.
One side had Space Marines with about 10 figures (the weapons were expensive) and another had Genestealers with about 30 figures.

I really kind of like the larger miniatures, but I can understand the frustration with 25mm minis that are 30 mm. Especially if you are trying to match minis.

Per the rules, smoke grenades should be purchasable by themselves, as well as add-on effects for other grenades.
I figured as much. The current incarnation of the customizer prices smoke grenades in any form at 0 points.
Thought you might need to know.
Something else it could use is more weapon slots. 16 just isn't covering it for me.

I have been working with the weapon customizer and I wanted to ask why some of the cells for things like Vehicle piercing and similar things are grayed out and you are not able to give some of those columns those features.
If you put Yes in the column then it removes the weapon cost.
Why does it do that?
Never mind... I am a doofus... I figured out what was going on. Sadly enough I figured it out in my sleep.. literally, I had a dream about it.

I would kind of like to see something that might work with Army Builder or like army builder.
A non-exel customizer would be nice. Open source... hmm... maybe not. I am not sure on that one.
Lots of traditional army lists would be nice.
Things like Historical, classic sci-fi (which aren't basically the 40K armies), and similar things. Something you might talk to small miniature companies is making armies for their minis to promote their figures.
Just some ideas.
Where do we go to get the update army customizer?
Something I noticed. There seems to be no option to set Impact Rating to 0. The only option is 1-4. So my 11 point weapon because 15 because I have to set it to IR 4. Is there something there I need to set?
Thanks,.

I sent a PM to get this handy item. I never got an e-mail about it. Is there some reason why a person wouldn't get to test it out?
Thanks,

robertsjf wrote:Count Zero, are those VOR figs packaged 1 per blister?
To be honest, I am not sure. That is what it looks like since the spec ops guys were a box set.
All the Vor minis I have are left over from when I attempted to get into Vor right before it was canceled.

Demian Rose wrote:Consider it done. I think that the vast majority of the time combo weapons are - in fact, you pay quite a premium to have extra round capability if you think about it - but as you both point out, there are a few ways in which unscrupulous players could violate the intent of the rule. As an unofficial stopgap:
-no army list may contain more than 2 combo weapon frames, +1 per each level of frame variety (i.e. max of 4)
-the minimum cost to add a second round is +10 PV for parallel, +5 PV for tandem.
-no weapon may have more than types of round
Let me know what you think. This is easy to change in the core book.
-Demian
I say don't change it. If someone is being cheesy like that then there is an easy way to deal with them.... refuse to play with them. If they whine find another player. Any system can be exploited... even the fix you are thinking of will be exploited. There is no need to change it. The players should balance the army, the system should never force it like that.
There may be an army it makes sense to have all the combo weapons. And, having to spend an action to change weapons is a big deal. That is a round without firing. That means you could feasibly loose the unit what it is switching weapons.
I would recommend guidelines instead. Stating not to exploit the rules and such.

If we purchased the PDF, do we get the updated PDF for free, or do we have to purchase it again?

Demian Rose wrote:Hey Folks,
We are planning on doing a formal print run for selling to stores. Does anyone have specific ideas about what would be worth putting on the back cover to attract gamers' interest, in terms of a text description (we already have a graphic in mind)? In other words, what do you think the game offers the typical gamer that makes it worth purchasing?
-Demian
Here are the aspects that attracted me.
- no rolling of buckets of dice (i.e. an attack is resolved with one die roll)
- squad based activation
- varied, consistant, and comprehensive army construction
- fast paced play
- playing the game requires tactical sense rather than strategic sense.
How you would put that into highlights on the back of a book. I am not sure, but that is what drew me into your game.

Hey Guys,
My current project is to convert the Union from Vor into Defiance. Since I have a whole nice collection of those miniatures, I figured I would use them. Of course, I was changing them a bit to make them more of a futuristic U.S. military. I am not going to do the hover tanks and such.
The nice thing is the Vor minis are now back in print and you can get them at Ironwind Metals Site (http://www.ralpartha.com/vor_news.htm).
I was wondering what armies are you guys making and what miniatures you are using? Where are you getting these miniatures?
Jonathan[/url]
So I have been wanting to play Defiance a bit more but I want to make my own army. Has anyone developed a army generator for the new rules?
Jonathan
