Not to mention you could crib Defiance's genre-specific Teleport rules for use with a Koralon army conversion.  The VOID version of the slugs do a lot of teleport/gate tricks which make their close combat orientation more effective.

Okay, having digested Merchant Wars, a few questions:

1) FACs have a very limited menu of weapons and equipment they can choose from, including Congreve rockets and their variants.  Hales are clearly included here, but are Fire Arrows a variant for purposes of this rule?  I'm guessing yes or someone would have said something about the Spiral design in the ship depository already, but I'd like to be sure.

2) FACs don't have an armor value at all, right?  They can't buy themselves up to a one, unlike real size one ships...I think.

3) Are gyros really forbidden on the little guys?  They probably don't really need them, but it would be nice to have the option...especially when facing size three VS gyro-ships who can actually out-turn you.  smile

4) Do FACs always start play attached to a ship, or can they begin deployed?  For that matter, can you field FACs without carriers?  I'm guessing not, from the fluff about Fisher's failed scout-plane concept.

I just got my IS minis in the mail myself, along with one of those Cronus mechs they make.  Pretty spiffy stuff, the ships are very cleanly cast and well detailed, although the fins make me nervous about durability.  The mech is absolutely huge, which doesn't really come across in the photos...larger than an Iron Kingdoms heavy warjack by a fair margin.

Has there been any "canonical" background on the Soviets past the period in the core rulebook?  I've been thinking about what kinds and numbers of ships they'd be fielding, but I don't want to duplicate effort if others have already worked on them...

Probably worth adding that drones being attacked by fighters (a "dogfight") don't cause casualties on ones, but if they attack fighters (or other drones, for that matter) they do so normally...hit on 4+ and removed afterwards.  They actually make a fairly decent fighter defense when used in large numbers...and yes, they can loiter, fly in circles, etc, just like a fighter.

One thing to consider, if you exchange a large number of light guns for a small number of heavy ones, you've also just changed your hit location chart so that your hull is going to get hit a lot more often.  Each hull lost will be worth less (maybe) because your overall cost will probably be lower, but you'll be losing them more often.

That said, the Bantam class is a much better ship with 4d10(x2) LPs as primaries instead of the 4d10(x3) conventional guns.  Those strong secondaries make up for any slight weakness against light-armor targets in my book.

OTOH, there *has* been a long tradition of navies incorrectly classifying ships to conceal their actual cost and/or combat power from both enemy intelligence services and their own governments' regulatory agencies.  Perhaps the Hunyadi is simply a very *large* heavy cruiser...as the Admiralty will attest when questioned about their budget.  smile

Arguably, yes, POD does fill the need for available hardcopy.  But I'm not sure that it allows you to put your product on the shelves of all those game stores out there, nor does it work well with the distribution net.

OTOH, perhaps the real question is whether MJ12 *needs* the distributor-retail system to sell their products.  Five years ago I would have said yes, you must get you stuff into stores to survive.  These days, between internet and word-of-mouth, maybe you don't...

I generally won't buy pdf-only products.  I've made a few exceptions to that in the past, but my general take on it is that if the publisher isn't willing to risk printing hardcopies (which isn't much of a risk with today's POD and desktop technologies), then they must be so unsure of their product that I don't need to own it.

Real print runs are a sign of confidence, and very reassuring to this consumer, at least.

Indeed, quite true.  As Royal Navy Astrographic Service experience has shown, the "viscosity" of the ether increases as local gravity decreases.  This increasing "grab factor" makes ether propulsion systems more effective in deep space than in orbit, allowing the higher speeds required for interplanetary transits...but it also makes etheric turbulence more of a factor.  While such effects are still only felt by the energized components of a ship's drive systems (normal matter being transparent to ether-flows) it is quite possible to suffer grevious damage if a severe ether-storm is encountered.  Sail ruptures, propeller overloads, even outright dismasting all await the incautious traveller, and even in high orbit "weather" conditions may force ships to deactivate their drives to ride out the storm safely.

All quite elementary, Carruthers.  smile

It's a moderately abstract strategic campaign game, loosely based off Starmada.  Works fine as a standalone game, or you can (with some minor effort) use Starmada for tactical combat produced by SovStars actions.

If Dan's run out I've got a spare copy floating around I wouldn't mind getting rid of...

Yep, the series is:

Ringworld
Ringworld Engineers
Ringworld Throne
Ringworld's Children

I enjoyed the first and fourth most, but they were all good reads.  RC is an exceptionally fine example of Niven's most polished writing, and it's really quite amusing how he manages to subtly work "corrections" for earlier astrophysical bloopers into the story.  It's also refreshingly short, not one of the 600 page slabs that have become the industry standard.  A really good storyteller never uses more words than he needs to...

I finally got around to reading this today, and I'd like to take this opportunity to say:

1) If you haven't read it, but you read the rest of the series, read it immediately.  May be the best one yet.

2) If you haven't read the rest of the series, do so, then proceed with step one.

3) If you have read it, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME TO READ IT EARLIER?!?  I'd have bought it hardcover if I'd known it was that good.

Damn fine read, and boy does it have some big concepts.  The only minor complaint I can come up with that nanotech is treated a *little* too much like magic...but that's a pretty common failing these days, and Niven makes it go down smooth.

Ah, the Dawghouse ain't so bad.  It's no Admiralty Lounge, mind you, and you gotta watch out for them damned dirty screws, but I'm sure you'll survive.  smile

I'm amused by the fact that what gets you jailed on TMP would be the height of civility over on Frothers.  Ye gods, that Big Mean Elf boy knows how to start an argument, and keep one going.  Feel the hate...

Which might explain why I spend *so* much more time on TMP than Frothers, come to think of it.

Maybe you should try going back to the old Starmada system and mark crew casualties from the back of the track?  That way you wouldn't be wasting effort when you use both conventional and gas guns on a larger target...assuming that's the issue.

Is the PDF errata being fixed "on the fly" on the POD hardcopy version, or does that need to wait for some kind of major update?  Not sure how the technology works...

Don't forget, though, it doesn't take very many boarding parties to ruin your day, especially if you have no Security or BPs of your own on defense.  Successful Boarding Pods also don't linger around on the table getting shot at, unlike fighters.  I like to think of them as drones with continuing damage and the ability to keep attacking till they hit, personally...

Eh, it's best not to be too thin-skinned about TMP posts.  The message boards there have become less and less civil over the last few years, and some people just enjoy busting on anything new that comes along.

OTOH, maybe they just didn't like them.  As you said, you can't please everyone.  So far I haven't heard any complaints from the Iron Stars crowd, and those are the people who really matter anyway.  I certainly like everything I've seen so far.

So, when are you taking orders?  smile

Last time I checked, the answers were:

1 - Yes, you always lose troops on a one.  Many people change this by house rules.

2 - Yes, it's simultaneous.

3 - Yes, you roll to hit on a 5+ just like fighters.  Or maybe not these days...I'm rusty.

4 - BPs fight until they die, either from being hit by enemy troops or rolling a one.

4B - You make one set of rolls per end phase as long as there are BPs on the ship.

Well, they would, wouldn't they?  They'll also work with Starmada, or A Sky Full of Ships, or Red Chicken Rising, or Parzival's GOBS rules.  Heck, I'd be tempted to use them as retro-tech Eldar in BFG if I was still playing.  smile

Really *good* minis make everybody happy...and at least it will spread some awareness of the fact that Iron Stars is out there, and just in time for the expansion.

That "no course change" idea is probably the way to go.  I was fiddling with some 8-hull designs last night trying to make a minimaxed minelayer and the results looked pretty alarming, although I didn't calculate cost...a really high CR might have made them reasonable, but I doubt it.  Thrust 9 and a gyro is a pretty alarming combo the way the rules stand at present.

I forget, does the rulebook say what happens when mines overlap each other?  Do you take damage from each field, or just once?
