I hope that it wasn't an error on my part - I did put that bleed on the cover, but was it enough? Or perhaps my PDF conversion was faulty, and  excluded it? sad

Nope. If there was an "error" on MJ12's behalf, it was mine, since I formatted the cover before uploading it to Lulu.

However, I still say the ultimate fault is the printers', since they formatted the cover for an 8.25" x 10.75" book, but printed it as 8.5" x 11".

but what happens if I speed (say 12") with my very small crafts (as the Volga's in the scenario 1), then turn 180°? in the end phase I can place the minefield up to 12" towards the direction I traveled as a sort of artillery... I'm sure this is not intended, maybe should be fixed?

Nah... no need for a fix -- you're using your ship's centrifigual (sp?) force to fling the mines out in the opposite direction...

Yeah, that's it... smile

Good spot. I'll have to figure out how to legislate this without placing the minefield in the middle of movement...

Yes, it would. But since it'd be set in the "Iron Stars" universe, it should use the IS mechanics.

Well, there's some clamouring over on TMP about whether "GW should do a WotW game"...

And, since Iron Stars is already in the Wellsian "universe", my wheels started a-turnin'...

Incidentally, why the rule that fresh ship explosions aren't reduced?  I suspect the answer was so that size-1 explosions still cause terrain.  It seems slightly unwieldy, though, to have to keep track of which explosions are fresh.  Better to reduce all of them, and accept the consequence that an exploding gunboat can damage other ships in its hex, but doesn't leave terrain.

But maybe that's just me.

Your suspicion is correct. An easy way around the problem would be to just increase the strength of all explosions by one -- but make sure to reduce their strength -before- applying their damage...

Thanks for the table, it helps greatly and is another item Peter can put on his "quick" referance sheet.

For the record, that's the table from the Compendium.  For example, the X rules don't list anything called an energy leech.

True. (Do you want energy leeches back? smile )

But it should be an easy thing to compare this chart to the Starmada X rules and come up with something comparable...

Hmm... maybe I should get around to that...

I see your point on this. I love playing Starmada with TREK ships.  I have been working to come up with a way to do this, but not much success yet.  If each shield arc has x number of defense points, then as long as a salvo doesn't do damage to the shield generator, they return to their normal value.

I would recommend AGAINST allowing shields to regenerate at the end of the turn. That was the one thing about STTCS that I disliked. And if there are problems integrating ablative shields into Starmada, they are multiplied by shields that regenerate... smile

Here's what I would do if I were to try out an ablative shields option:

1) Each ship has a designated "shield strength" to each of the six hexsides.

2) Every time a PEN die needs to be rolled against the target, reduce the strength of the appropriate hexside by 1.

3) Once the number of PEN dice that strike that hexside exceeds the shield strength, go directly to the damage roll (i.e., in this system there would never be a need for a PEN roll).

4) Continue with the DMG rolls as normal.

Should give you someplace to start... but don't ask how to point cost it. smile

So powers-in-the-know, what is the answer to my explosion question?

Explosions occur at the end of the Combat Phase, and they do damage in the End Phase -- so yes, they do damage on their first turn.

The Compendium had an end-phase sequence which for some reason I never got around to updating for X:

I. Game Board Effects
   A. Explosion Counters
II. Movement
   A. Hyperspace
   B. Interdictor Fields
   C. Stutterdrives
III. Launching
   A. Battle Satellites
   B. Boarding Pods
   C. Drones
   D. Energy Leeches
   E. Fighters
   F. Mines
IV. Sensors
   A. Anime-Style Spinal Mount Declaration
   B. Bogey Revelation
   C. Sensor Locks
   D. Tachyon Detection & Ranging Locks
V. Combat & Weapon Effects
   A. Bore Missiles
   B. Greek Firebombs
   C. Q-Ship Conversion
   D. Shipboard Combat
VI. Repairs
   A. Auto-Repair System
   B. Damage Control
   C. Organic Hull

Not everything applies, but it gives you something to reference.

Not to sound snippy, but I warned you that this would happen in this format. sad

This has nothing to do with the format. I saw your message... I just didn't feel like answering yet. tongue

Well, I finally got my copy of Defiance, and I must say I'm thrilled with the quality of the work: the writing, the layout, the graphics are all superb. (YEs, I'd seen the PDF, but it didn't do the 250-page book justice.)

Also, the print quality is very high, and the binding looks to be solid.

Unfortunately, the book was set up as 8.25" x 10.75", and I told the POD provider to print it that way. It came as 8.5" x 11"... which is fine on the interior; you can't even tell.

But on the cover, there's a white band running down the outside edge, where the graphic stopped (yes, there was a bleed provided, but it appears that the POD provider cropped it at 8.25".)

This makes no sense; why would you print something at 8.5" yet crop the cover image at 8.25"?

It's a small issue, hardly worth mentioning, but I am a perfectionist. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a problem because mine is a "proof copy"?

One of the pluses of SFB is the fact that when you energize shields you have X number of shields in each arc and they have to be overcome before scoring damage to the hull and ship.

Any ideas?

Initially, I can say that this was the point of the "screens" option -- while it doesn't provide the "ablative" characteristic that you are looking for, it does allow for differentiation between the shield arcs.

The reason ablative-type shielding never made it into Starmada is that suddenly it would place an emphasis on the order in which weapons are fired -- something that is irrelevant in the current setup.

I suppose it would be possible to set it up like SFB, but there would be additional considerations beyond just saying "each hit reduces shield strength by one".

No one here's got reason to care, but it'll look sharp sitting on the game table at the session on Saturday.

I'm glad to hear it. Too bad my copy of Defiance is still MIA... sad
