Hello everyone,
All of my ships have Armor Plating.  From the 17 hull BBs to my 1 and 2 hull small ships, they all have armor plating.  I find it very useful and cost effective.  It allows my ships to survive more damage.  Also, having the engines very well protected is a bonus. 
I never use counter measures or Firecontrol (which probably should be called Advanced Fire Control).  I find these two to be Not worth their cost.  But you will never see one of my ships without Armor plating... :geek:

It is to defend against threats like this that all Bases may want to consider having a... cloaking device(!)
When these accelerating ships are 31 hexes away, the base can go into cloak the next turn and when the swarm arives, there is nothing to shoot at <LOL>.  Any thoughts?

The battle that my nephew & I played with the others was excellent.  There were 5,000 points on a side.  My nephew's Hunter class ships were excellent, and each of them had a single heavy weapon with other secondary weapons.  These ships became priority targets.  I had eight flights of "SeaSlug Strikers" launched from DDGs in my fleet. These strikers are 1/3+/1/3 with Piercing +1.  Each flight of these Seaslugs had 8 strikers.  All eight flights ravaged one of the powerful Hunter class ships and strippeded it of its weapons.  The other one was fired on by all of the ships of Gaming Glenn and I, and also pulverized. 
It was a slug-fest very much like some of the naval battles in 1942 in Ironbottom Sound near Guadalcanal.. 
I had two of my 600 point Tennessee class DNs that are listed in the B-Basin.  They can (& did) deliver and can take a pounding... :geek:

My guess is that the to hit number required is based on the hex that is in the center of the area off effect; the target hex.  This would be because the weapon seems to detonate there and any attacks on ships closer to the firing ship come from that hex. Note that these AoE attacks may hit a shield not facing the firing ship.  For those with faceted shields this can come as a suprise...
Also, a weapon with a miximum range of 15 could hit ships that are 16 hexes away with Area of Effect.  Given the cost of such a weapon ability, this is not unreasonable. 8-)

Hello everyone,
     
I am traveling down to southern Florida again for Thanksgiving.  My gaming friends and I are playing Starmada Friday November 27th at
The Adventure Game Store owned by Gaming Glenn in Davie, Fla near Fort Lauderdale. We are playing at 1 pm. (We may also play on Wed Nov 25nd)
Everyone is welcome.
We will have convoy vs raider battles, fights over a planet, etc. We always have a blast when we play. 
     
Bring your designs. The only Four restrictions we have are:
First, we don't use ammo/expendables.
Second, we don't use Piercing +3. However Piercing +1 & +2 are fine. 
Third, we have now set the maximum range for Shipboard weapons at 18 hexes.  :shock: 
Fourth, the maximum Tech level in all catagories is Tech Zero.

My friends and I here in Florida are going to limit the maximum range on Shipboard weapons to 18 hexes. 
(Immoble Bases, etc. can still have up to range 30 hex weapons)

When we play, it is rare for him to lose.  I admire his designing ability, and have watched my ships get pulverized over half the time by his ships.

Hmmm,
I will have to see of my other Florida Starmada Gamers want to limit maximum range to 18 hexes for starships.  We can reserve the 24 and 30 hex range for immobile spacestations.  This would parallel the long range of Phaser Fours in Star Fleet Battles.
I would be fine with this change. 8-)

Hello everyone,
I have just finished reading the Klingon Armada suppliment and once again noted that no ships had weapons that fired farther than 18 hexes.  Even the Phaser Fours only fired out to 24. 
My friends and I play using weapons that often fire out to 30 hexes.  And I began to wonder: do many players use the ranges beyond 18 hexes? 
Although weapons that fire out 30 are more expensive, having such weapons has made fighters almost obsolete in the games we have played.  They get shot out of space long b4 they can get close.  These longer ranges even make it difficult for strikers to hit.  I must confess that I like having the main batteries on my BBs fire to 30, and the secondaries fire out to 20 using caronnade. 8-)   
I am curious; do most players use 18 as the maximum range for weapons?

Thoughts?
I would not attack a planet protected with one of these, but would blockade it. 
Or I would take a lot of small ships with short range weapons and 5 pts of screens that would face the station.  Since this station won't move, build up speed from a distance and make sure that when you are 31 hexes away that you are going speed 30 and then move from out of range to very close.  And then blast away with these cheap ships with short range weapons.  It could work.  8-) 
Stations are more vulnerable to this type of attack than ships which can move....

In the games I play, we use a floating map and have used the half hexes for a unit that was going to turn so we didn't have to move everyone..  I say, "Use ''em!"  There are no map edges in outer space. tongue

It almost seems as if the game is getting a little more complex.  I have not been able to play in a while, but all of this new stuff such as dual mode, ignores shields and some of the other stuff almost gives me a head ache.  tongue 
I have just gotten two copies of Klingon Armada.  I will have to look thru it carefully and see if I can make sense of these new options... :oops:

If this option of shields of 6, 7, & 8 becomes reality, will their be a parallel option of alocating more than 5 points of screens to a facing?  My BBs use screens.  8-) 
This is one reason I like range 30 weapons.  I can keep hostile ships at middle range, from 15 to 20 hexes away and it is easier to have screens protect my capital ships at that range.
Also my range 20, w/caronade, AA weapons chew up fighters long b4 most of them can launch any attack.  :!:

The idea of expandes shields has merrit when you consider that weapons can have a modifier of Piercing +3.  Thus, even level eight shields wound be pierced 1/6 th of the time.  BTW, I think that as long as Piercing +3 weapons can exist, the higher level shields are NOT cost effective.
In the games we play at Gaming Glenn's store in S. Fla., we have banned Piercing +3.  We agreed on this because shields become almost useless when they encounter weapons with this weapon ability.  Level 5 shields were penetrated 2/3 of the time, and were no longer cost effective.  My Navy-style ships have some weapons with piercing +2 (The heavy guns) and some that have no piercing, incase someone comes in w/o shields.  These ones are also used for AA fire. :geek:

I remember some of the space station rules from the Starmada Compendium edition. 
One of these doubled the range of weapons because the space station was stationary.  What are peoples thoughts on this?  :geek:

These are the type of ships that Gaming Glenn and I face when we play against my nephew.  yikes 
These ships seem unstopable.  Hopefully keeping everyone at tech Zero will limit things like this.   tongue

I like the range three bombers.  I will use something similiar as torpedo boats.  These will mix well with the DNs that I have.  I hope they vex my nephew Psycho829. tongue
