Did you keep a note as to which ships were "pretty close" and where they differed?
I may be getting paranoid.

Yeah, that would be A4

And that probably throws my SU, defence factor and thrust factor table into the bin, as I sized it so it could be printed out on a piece of A4...

I have to admit all of the pdf files I have made are A4 but I thought that Adobe Reader could shrink the pages slightly for other paper sizes :?:
I have made a few changes and put everything in one pdf.
Wonder if anyone noticed the fighter from the front of the SFO book which Dan said I could include.

If they each had a different letter, it could be the first letter of the ship's name.

I did consider something like this but it falls down a bit if someone has a fleet with ships with names such as Apollo, Achilles, Agrippa, Archer, Avenger . . . . .
I could number pairs of the vector counters.

BTW, my color printer (an HP 2610) can't print on the bottom 3/4" of the page. Is there any way you could shift things slightly so that none of the counters are within 3/4" of any edge?

There should be a 2cm or more gap, is your adobe reader in agreement with your printer? I sometimes find that I have changed a setting somewhere when I have any print problem. See if I can change anything without making them smaller.

Glad that the counters are being of use.

I will add speed 0 counters and vector movement counters.
Will probably combine the two pdf files.

How will you indicate which ship each counter represents, making a note on the back?

Any others wanted before I do a new pdf?

Trouble is, I do doodle, doodle and doodle some more. I literally cannot sketch. Part of that is due to poor hand-eye co-ordination (my handwriting can be so bad sometimes I have trouble reading it, which does lead to some annoyance when going over some of my older SAE and SX designs), but the main part is just my complete lack of art skills.

I was joking about the pen and paper, I have sketches and notes everywhere (I seem to keep buying paper and note pads!) and don't get me started on pens.
It has been getting hard to find pens that are comfortable to use (holding thin pens/pencils hurts). Thank god for self amalgamating tape. I have started buying cheap pens where the body of the pen can have the middle pulled out and replaced with a new one. I have wrapped the tape around a couple of them to a thickness that makes them more comfortable to use and less likely to be dropped.

My understanding was that the seeker's attack dice are calculated at launch which would include such things as flares.
When the counter is flipped is is considered to have already reached the target but not yet made the attack, which is why ships other then the target use their range to the target to calculate any firing at the seeker.

Oh, I remember pen and paper and ink wells big_smile
At least I did not have to use quills!
Always the way when you need something printed.

Advice: If you are going to use an inkjet printer do not let the ink run out. Better to use cheaper ink and waste a little than have expensive ink run out. It really mucks up the print head as without ink to shoot out the printhead cannot suck more ink in.
Lot of people think that the ink nozzle is blocked when it actually has nothing in it.
I found that out and had to buy a new printhead.

There was a piece in another thread about the calculations and the advice given was round to two decimal places.
That is the way I have gone with shipyard nova.

Unlike with previous editions, there has been no hull chart of any sort to give the SUs, defence factor and thrust factor for at least some of the hulls. That means you have to calculate them yourselves. While I did do that for sizes up to hull 75(!), it still is on a separate piece of paper and not in the book. I realise space is the primary reason for this, but I do believe we could have lost something (for example, the timeline) and had a chart. While I realise I could have said this earlier, it wasn't at the forefront of my mind until I actually started to give it some thought, after the realisation I haven't done any ship designs (can you say catch-22?).

If you have already done the math is there anything stopping you from printing a chart to put in the back of your book?

murtalianconfederacy wrote:

The weapon design process is slightly difficult, too. While the improved accuracy of the 2 d.p. for most traits makes it easier to differentiate different effects, it can lead to the decimal cascade effect where a weapon can have an initial SU cost (before arcs and # of weapons) of three or four numbers after the decimal point. This, combined with the inferred but not actually stated rule of rounding (is it rounded normally, or do you round up?), makes weapon design a tad difficult with P+P.

Page 49 "final values are rounded to the nearest integer when placed on the ship display".

murtalianconfederacy wrote:

And the combined bogeyman of the armour defence score and defence score in total is a big issue. While it makes it excellent to give ships different defences, in the P+P design stage you now have three different numbers plus the equipment that affects the defence score. This makes it difficult to tinker with a design, which I tend to do (to see if I can fit more weapons or fighters, for example, or whether I can fit the current weapons on the vessel even with stronger defences).

Which is why there are construction tools smile
I start with a sketch and think about what goes where and why first and then fit the stats after, which is probably why my ships are not stuffed to the gills with weapons.
MY advice, relax and don't make a chore of it. wink

BTW what has Post & Packing got to do with design?

Structure needed to hold and launch other ships without the stress tearing the "carrier" apart.
I should stress that any carried ships are constructed in their own right with their own CRAT etc. The space taken up by the carried ships is just that "Space" not mass. If you bought a blown egg you would not expect to pay for the contents that it used to have. The actual discussion was a couple of years and a computer ago, I cannot remember the exact details. I can only say that 40% worked for my designs at the time and you could apply that the carrier has to be at least a third bigger than the carried ship total.
Sometimes it is better to think of SU not as space unit but available mass unit.
It was only a suggestion as there were no rules set in stone.
I'd say go with whatever works for you until Dan publishes a book with them in.

Hmmm, wonder if anyone has built a "tube" ship that you could hide others in?

The "Tender" in the Aracnonoi pdf actually came about when looking at the Boltian Star League Szunheg class Attack Boat Tender, which carries six boats internally in a clam shell hull.
Tender, Mothership, Hollow Asteroidal Base or Deathstar are all essentially the same except that the name implies a size.
Everything depends upon the size of the ships that you want to carry and different settings have different size ships.
Take my WWC Destroyer which is hull size 10. If I wanted a carrier or hollow base for six of them, at most it would cost the carrier 2,872SU(40% of total destroyer group SU) or just under 20 hull (I know weird figures but that is down to available SU calculation, hull 20 having 2,948 SU). Of course the 20 hull needed to house them would mostly be an empty shell with the needed docking equipment.

I have used tenders in the Aracnonoi.
The tender paying 25% of the total SU of the size 1 ships (attack boats/Flotilla ships) carried.
For ships of size 2 and upwards 40% of the carried ships SU.
The "Tender" could be anything from a tug to a warpdrive with a battle bridge.
I had revised the pdf with interaction between the ship being carried and the carrier.

No.
The book example works on a scientific calculator but a spreadsheet does not work in the same way.
The above does give the correct answer in a spreadsheet.
To see this, look at shipyard nova (Ship cell B121) which gives the armor score.

Looks good Paul, just a couple of things...how come planet 2 appears to be Mars, but the rest are just the shaded hexes? Also, I recall that you had done a bunch of counters and markers that were pleasing to the eye for the earlier SAE version...is there a chance that you could add that stuff into the SNE version you have posted? It would be nice to have additional faction art to choose from if nothing else. Either way, I'll be putting this to use! Thanks, Erik

Work in progress, started from file which had no changes so I had not put a planet (or 2) in for each size yet.
Trying to keep it to a postable size.
I will post it again when I have finished putting in some more bits.
I take it you mean the Ants, Aracnonoi and the dinner on legs?
I may even include the WWC ships (half way through a light cruiser for them ATM.)
I may re post it Monday, so far, planets and Aracs with their web strands added.

Generic fighters - a few types.*
*Full strength and damaged shown for all faction fighters.
Flares added to Terrain.
Mines updated.
Move type markers (can just show order given) if wanted.

Yes but the problem is an Arc modifier of -1 according to the table represents a battery making up <85% of the total batteries.  ie. 1 gun is equal to 100% of the battery's, thus is equal to an arc modifier of 0 according to the chart.  Yet I have to label it as a -1 on the drydock calculator.
What am I missing about this chart?

Poliorcetes

If you are using the Drydock forget the chart on page 49.
BeowulfJB is saying enter the number of weapons after the Arc not a modifier.

Of course such things are a bit clearer in shipyard nove. wink

I have been putting together some counters that I could post in a day or so if you can wait that long.

I prefer numbered drone counters so that I can keep a simple list of what is going after who (since the target is declared on launch). Is that a problem?

There are already some shuttles in the "files" section. The new counters will be double sided to show damaged fighters and drones.
