In honour of Jutland, I ran a GF3 WW1 game last night, being the pre-Jutland 'Fate of Germany' scenario in the K&K supplement.
(Alas still too many ships in dry dock to run Jutland...yet!)

The Royal Navy operated in three squadrons:
1. 3 x KGV BBs
2. 3 x Orion BBs
3. Four BCs: 2 x Lion, 1 x Queen Mary, 1 x Tiger.

The Imperial German Navy operated five squadrons:
1. 4 x Helgoland BBs
2. 4 x Nassau BBs
3. 3 x Braunschweig BB
4. 5 x Deutschland BBs
5. 4 x Kaiser BBs (-1, still in dry dock...)

The RN stood off and took advantage of their superior range as the Germans attempted to close.
Eventually the Germans began to land shots, but at the cost of two sunk (the Hessen & Deutschland).
Called time with one round to go (of six, after the first shots), the RN having landed 94 hits compared to 57 by the Germans.
The RN BCs had taken heavy damage and perhaps might not have lasted... still a resounding British victory, Rule Britannia!

Some taster photos in the shared album link:

First time out with 1/6000 ships, some scale adjustment to allow for manoeuvre, kept command at 2"=1kyd but compressed range & speed to 1" per 1kyd. Set-up was a bit clunky & will need to revisit, allowed RN to set-up parallel to the long edge.

Cheers,
Wilf

PS spot a few of the new Jutland cards? ;-)

Daniel,
Thanks for the clarifications, which shall apply from the next game.

Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding damage & criticals that came up during a game the other night.

Using the Alternative Damage resolution system as per the new supplements, how does one account for torpedo damage?
I stuck a ship with one torpedo resulting in a loss of enough hull boxes to trigger a damage check.
Reviewing the damage options (being mostly gun-related) don't seem to chime with a below waterline hit?
Would the damage resolution be applied normally, justifying a loss of weapon system caused by below the waterline damage (magazine supply/turret/mechanism damage etc.)
Ignore the gun-related hits, so only a 5 or 6 for torpedo & speed-related damage?
Revert to the original method?
Ignore, as the torpedo re-roll of natural sixes abstract critical damage?

When  the Alternative Damage critical/s are rolled, does one also apply the doubled/trebled result for the accumulated damage as well as the critical damage? I housed ruled the critical took precedence, as both together seemed an overkill and thematically didn't correlate, i.e. gun battery damage with a bridge or engine hit.

Cheers!

Hi Daniel,

Any update on Tzar & Emperor?

Cheers,

Let me clarify my line of thought....

Completely agree the principle of over-penetration equating to large calibre shells not exploding when passing though no/low armour.

I meant more likely to hit at a shallow angle in relation to the target centreline, rather than more likey 'to hit' per se.

Such a shell penetrating the target bow/stern is likely to travel the length of the target ship rather than across the width, so the chances of cumulatively hitting something more solid increases, i.e. multiple armoured bulkheads, engine, boilers, magazine, etc.

Probably just me over-thinking !

wink

My thought would be to only use the over-penetration rule when not crossing the T.
When crossing the T a shell is likely hit at an acute angle & therefore travel further through the hull or superstructure, thus more likely to cause damage?

Hi Chaps,

I ran the Falklands scenario last night, myself as the RN.
A minor victory for the Germans, who managed to nearly cripple Invincible and then head over the horizon.
They did lose the Scharnhorst and one of their CLs whilst making their escape.

I couldn't close quick enough, as steering towards them lost too much headway.
A combination of woeful dice rolls on my part and withering fire from all German ships focussing on Invincible (without penalty). Even the German CLs at long range (Vet crews) were rolling one dice and hitting!
Great fun!

Nah, I'm real patient..
It just happens that most of my ships are Russo-Japanese pre-dreadnought.
However, I do plan to run Jutland next year .. tick... tock.. ;-)
The Figurehead 1/6000 British Fleet Pack is top of the lead mountain....

My RJW fleet is from Navwar, being UK-based.
1/3000 works well with reasonable-sized engagments on a 6' x 4' table.
We now have a host of pre-dreadnought nations vying to rule the waves down the Club:

From the US, War Times Journal look real nice!: http://www.wtj.com/store/
Of course other scales are available.... and your budget.. and your painting skilles  wink

Hi Marauder,

A fair point but no, I left them all zero-rated: technically no hostilities prior to this battle...
The objective was to introduce the rules, so not unduly concerned abour CQs & Crew ratings.
We did overlook the over-penetration & over-concentration: once we'd realised we'd done so we decided to disregard for that game to keep it consistent.
Will know better next time, all part of the learning curve...
Next up Round 2 off the Falklands, with the Germans as veterans...

Cheers,
Wilf

I also ran my first game of GF3 with some pals down the Club last week.

We ran the Coronel scenario from King & Kaiser, adding the Canopus and Otranto to add to the spectacle.

The Germans made the mistake of pairing off their CLs against the RN ACs & Canopus, both being sunk.
The Scharnhorst & Gniesenau were fixated on the Otranto, yet unable to hit the proverbial barn door.
Eventually, by attrition, the Otranto was sunk: not very historical, but a great tutorial game!

Gents,

Check out some fine beers from Brewdog.www.brewdog.com
A Scottish craft brewer inspired by the US craft beer scene.
They do some fine IPAs & Stouts, amongst more exotic offerings.
Their growth has been exceptional, & now in the spirit of 'Coals to Newcastle',they plan to open a US brewery in Columbus, Ohio.

Hi All!

Newbie here, having just recently purchased GF3 via the Wargame Vault flash sale.

My interest is in WW1 and I noticed that the King & Kaiser expansion is for GF2.
Are there any plans to convert to GF3? Or a means of converting from GF2 to GF3?

I appreciate that GF3 includes all the equations to create ship stats from scratch, but i would rather someone else 'in the know' put the effort in!

I would like to run a North Sea campaign culminating in Jutland as a series of linked tabletop games over the anniversary, using 1/6000.

I have been enjoying Naval Thunder (mainly pre-Dread), but have the impression that GF3 offers a faster play game, ideal for larger engagements over one evening.

Cheers!
Wilf
